Is the ACT the best choice for you?

Did you know that more students nationally take the ACT than the SAT? The number of students who take the ACT in the northeast is very small, but those who do take it tend to score higher than their counterparts in any other region in the country.

Chyten recommends 24–36 hours of private tutoring for comprehensive ACT prep, which includes prep for the optional ACT Writing Test.

What makes the ACT unique

  • The ACT allows less time per question
  • The ACT requires more reading
  • The ACT includes a science test
  • ACT questions are more straightforward
  • The ACT has an optional Writing Test

Why the PSAT is important

Did you know that a student with high PSAT scores can earn National Merit Scholarships? This is a hugely helpful factor on college applications. Plus since they’re both written by the College Board, it’s a first opportunity to practice for the SAT.

Chyten’s private tutoring for PSAT offers customized solutions based on your individual strengths and weaknesses. Personalized instruction is centered around Chyten’s proprietary manual, Mastering the SAT, which contains more than 100 of Chyten’s proven strategies, more than 1,000 practice questions, and almost 800 pages of essential PSAT information.

Advanced Placement courses and exams

The term AP, or Advanced Placement, is commonly used to refer to both AP courses and AP tests. You can take as many AP courses and tests as you wish, though your high school may have some restrictions of which you should be aware. Many schools offer challenging non-AP courses that may still prepare you for AP tests. You are also allowed to self-study, or to study outside of school in order to take AP tests on your own.

When you sign up for AP courses, you show everyone that you are not afraid of a challenge and that you care enough about your education to select the most rigorous programs possible.

Colleges typically consider AP classes as part of a rigorous and challenging curriculum, which is a major factor in determining admission. Unlike other tests like the SAT and ACT, you only have one chance to do well on your AP exams, so proper scheduling and preparation are crucial.

AP Tutoring at Chyten

Chyten offers support for both AP courses and AP tests. AP class tutoring is typically done over an entire school year, though it also can be done over a short period such as when challenging assignments come up. AP test prep typically runs for two months, though that time frame can vary based on individual needs.

There are some big dates ahead. Many students will be taking the ACT, the SAT, and SAT Subject Tests along with AP tests. You will have other chances to boost your scores—with all but the AP tests. Managing dates and study time appropriately is critical to success.

SAT Subject Test tips

Though there is a small penalty for wrong answers, do not leave any questions blank. you only need to get one out of every five answers right to break even. Since even random guessing gives you those odds, best-guess is better than no-guess.
Take subject tests for single-year subjects (Biology, U.S. History) in May or June. Take more general tests (Math, Literature) earlier in the year, and repeat if necessary.
Always take three tests in a single sitting. Each is only an hour; taking more tests gives you the best possible chance of getting your highest scores.
Order your tests strategically on testing day. If you are usually better early in the morning, take your most challenging test first. Know which tests your target schools want you to take. Many will provide guidelines outlining their requirements and suggestions.

SAT Subject Test prep at Chyten

Chyten’s team of subject matter experts can help you create a strategic testing plan to coordinate all of your chosen Subject Tests. We recommend 8-12 hours of tutoring per subject for maximum efficacy.

High School Admissions

ISEE private school admissions exam

Private schools want the highest-quality students they can find, and there are only so many metrics available by which to measure. While interviews and essays are important, the discussion begins—or ends—with test scores and grades. The higher your grade point average, the higher your likelihood of acceptance.

The same is true of your standardized test scores. Most schools tell you which exam they prefer. In other cases, you’ll be given the choice of taking the ISEE or the SSAT. Choosing the right exam requires a deep understanding of what is tested and how the questions are presented. Chyten can help you with this important decision.

The ISEE is offered eight times per year. Students can take the ISEE once during each of three testing windows: fall (August–November), winter (December–March), and spring/summer (April–July)—up to three times in a 12-month admission cycle. The ISEE can also be taken in a private setting once every six months. This private testing is referred to as a Flex Test. Chyten does not offer the Flex Test, but we can find you a suitable Flex Test center.

Since you can choose which scores are sent to prospective schools, taking the test more than one time is a no-lose strategy. Chyten recommends taking the test in July, November, and December during the year in which you will be applying to private school.

Personalized ISEE instruction at Chyten is centered around Chyten’s proprietary manual, Mastering the ISEE/SSAT, which contains nearly 100 of Chyten’s time-proven strategies, hundreds of practice questions and 300 pages of ISEE and SSAT information. Typically, Chyten recommends 24–36 hours of private tutoring for comprehensive ISEE SSAT prep, including the essay.

SSAT Private School admissions exam
When you need to make a strong case for admission to private school, take full advantage of the opportunity. The SSAT score is one of the most critical aspects of the private school admission process. It is offered eight times per year, though most students take the test in November, December, or January. Chyten recommends taking the SSAT once in the summer and then at least twice during the academic year before you submit your applications.

The SSAT is administered by the Secondary School Admission Test Board. It has a Middle Level, previously called the Lower Level, for 5th through 7th graders (applying for admission to grades 6–8), and an Upper Level for 8th through 11th graders. The SSAT Board recently introduced an Elementary Level, for 3rd and 4th grade students (applying for admission to grades 4 and 5).

Thousands of students have dramatically improved their SSAT scores using our proprietary methods and strategies. To accomplish this we recommend 24-36 hours of preparation for the SSAT exam. These private tutoring services provide customized solutions based on your individual strengths and challenges.

Practice Test

Practice makes perfect

Taking practice tests is a great way to boost skills and test new strategies, as well as to identify the types of questions you’re comfortable with and those on which you need more help. You can also work on pacing, practice your guessing strategies, and fine-tune your analytical skills.

While you can accomplish some of these same things by taking tests in a book or even online, taking tests under real conditions and having your results reviewed by one of our experts helps analyze your progress while desensitizing you to the testing process.

Our tutoring series and group classes offer multiple practice opportunities. However we also offer an a la carte option for students who are not yet enrolled. Call us today to schedule your practice test at any one of our centers.

How does taking ACT practice tests help?
Taking practice ACT tests can give you a feel for a test that is dramatically different from the SAT. The ACT includes a science section, allows for less time per question and requires different criteria on the essay portion. For some, the ACT format can be smooth sailing, while for others it’s a stressful experience. Take the time to learn whether this test is right for you by taking the Chyten Real Conditions ACT practice test.

Our tutoring series and group classes offer multiple practice opportunities. However we also offer an a la carte option for students who are not yet enrolled. Our academic directors can schedule your practice test in person or by phone.

Which test is better for you?
Chyten has developed a single diagnostic test that uses a proprietary algorithm to accurately diagnose your relative performance on the ACT and the SAT. Our ACT vs. SAT Comparison Test compresses all components of the ACT and the SAT into a single test. It is accompanied by a highly detailed diagnostic report which provides performance analysis on every type and category of ACT and SAT question, including detailed analytics on testing trends and habits, and gives a recommendation on which test is more likely to maximize your test scores.
